The European Commission has adopted a comprehensive ban on the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials, primarily due to concerns regarding its potentially harmful health effects.

BPA is a chemical commonly used in the production of various plastics and resins.

This newly established ban prohibits BPA in products that come into direct contact with food or beverages. This includes applications such as coatings on metal cans, reusable plastic drink bottles, water distribution coolers, and various kitchenware.

This decisive action follows a favorable vote by EU Member States earlier this year. Additionally, the Council and the European Parliament conducted a careful scrutiny period, taking into account the latest scientific evaluations provided by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Notably, EFSA has identified that BPA poses potential risks to the immune system. The proposed ban emerged after a public consultation and thorough discussions with all member states.

It’s worth noting that BPA is already prohibited in the EU for infant bottles and similar products. For most categories, there will be an 18-month phase-out period to allow the industry adequate time to adjust and prevent disruption in the food supply chain. Furthermore, the ban extends to other bisphenols recognized as harmful to reproductive and endocrine systems.

Oliver Várhelyi, commissioner for health & animal welfare, emphasized: “Maintaining high food safety standards in the European Union and protecting citizens is one of the Commission’s highest priorities. Today’s ban, which is based on solid scientific advice, will protect our consumers against harmful chemicals where they can come into contact with their food and drink.”
