CCL Label has launched a next-generation shrink sleeve made from recycling-friendly polyolefin (PO) material in Southeast Asia. This low-density PO material is ideal for flotation separation in the sink/float process utilized by PET recyclers, enhancing efficiency in food and drink packaging.

High-shrink version enables the switch from unsustainable sleeves

“The development of this high-shrink version of our award-winning EcoFloat shrink sleeve enables our brand customers to transition from PVC or PET-G shrink sleeves, which are harmful to recycling, to a more sustainable option crafted from polyolefin. This material is approved by recyclers and has received endorsements from RecyClass in Europe and APR in the United States,” states Marika Knorr, global head of sustainability at CCL Label.

“Traditionally, polyolefin material was thought to have lower shrinkage compared to other materials. However, with controlled TD shrinkage of up to 73%, the new generation sleeves are compatible with most packaging formats, particularly bottles,” explains Ken Loh, Technical Manager at CCL Label Thailand. “These shrink sleeves work well in both steam and hot air shrink tunnels, featuring high gloss, remarkable clarity, and scuff resistance.”

Additionally, the sleeve is available in a white version called EcoFloat WHITE, designed specifically for light-sensitive products such as dairy, supplements, and vitamins. This innovation allows brands to move from non-recyclable white HDPE bottles to transparent PET bottles that can be recycled into food-grade material. The light-blocking barrier is integrated into the sleeve itself, promoting sustainability.

How does the sleeve perform in recycling?

The sleeve plays a critical role in the PET recycling process by facilitating the essential sink/float step. Its low-density polyolefin composition ensures that it floats, allowing for easy separation from the PET bottle flakes. The density separation process is straightforward: heavier PET flakes sink to the bottom, while the floating material collects at the top. This efficient method enables recyclers to obtain high-quality, clean PET flakes that can be transformed back into food-grade packaging, benefiting the dairy and other industries.

EcoFloat is already trusted by numerous brand customers, both large and small, around the globe. It has garnered multiple accolades, including the prestigious FINAT Sustainability Award 2023.
