A groundbreaking paper bottle making machine is now operational at a packaging company in Cambridge, Ont, revolutionizing food and drink sustainable packaging.
Kinsbrae Packaging President, Shawn Bonnick, proudly states, “It’s the world’s first bottle that can be mass produced and easily used on current filling lines.”
This innovative bottle, made from flat 100 per cent post-consumer recycled board, is printed on directly at Kinsbrae Packaging. The unique design allows for label printing all around the bottle, including the bottom.
Highlighting the bottle’s eco-friendly nature, Bonnick explains, “Inside, we have our HDPE nozzle with the PET bladder inside. All of it can be thrown right into your blue bin and recycled.”
The machine responsible for producing these revolutionary paper bottles hails from a company called Frugal in the United Kingdom.
Recyclability
The recyclability of these paper bottles is a standout feature for Bonnick. He emphasizes, “When you look at the bottle itself, the initial thought is that it’s a paper bottle. Absolutely environmentally friendly. Take the bottle, throw it into your blue bin and call it a day.”
Due to their lightweight and durable design, these paper bottles offer significant advantages throughout the supply chain. The flat and lightweight nature of the bottles results in more efficient storage on trucks and in warehouses.
Georgian Bay, a spirit company based in Ontario, is the first recipient of these innovative paper bottles, citing the environmental impact and cost benefits as key factors in their decision to switch.
Marketing Power
Despite being in the early stages of production, the response to these paper bottles has been overwhelmingly positive according to Bonnick. He notes, “The spirit industry has surprised drastically in the sense of their early adaptation of the bottle, because that’s going to stand out on the shelf.”
Georgian Bay Co-founder, Denzil Wadds, echoes this sentiment, stating, “Not only can we brand the whole bottle, but we can tell the story of the liquid in the bottle. It’s just so much better at delivering messages.”
The unique design of the paper bottle allows for full branding, making it a standout choice on store shelves. Additionally, its lightweight and eco-friendly nature make it suitable for areas where glass bottles are prohibited, such as national parks.
Looking ahead, there are plans to bring more machines to Cambridge to increase the production of these innovative paper bottles. Keep an eye out for Georgian Bay bottles at LCBO stores in the coming weeks.
