Amcor (NYSE: AMCR, ASX: AMC), a global leader in developing innovative and responsible packaging solutions, has been honored at the 35th Packaging Innovation Awards (PIA) for its AmPrima® Plus solution designed specifically for coffee packaging.

Sponsored by Dow, this esteemed award highlights excellence in packaging while promoting advancements in sustainability and performance. The Special Award category, which Amcor clinched, focuses on emerging market innovations and pioneering developments in mono-material packaging.

Amcor’s AmPrima® solution has garnered attention for its application in recyclable coffee packaging. This new pouch provides coffee producers with a remarkable 68% reduction in carbon footprint compared to traditional packaging options. This assertion is based on a lifecycle assessment conducted through Amcor’s ASSET model, which holds certification from the Carbon Trust.

The recognition from PIA underscores a rising consumer demand for more sustainable food and drink packaging solutions. Recent research by Amcor indicates that sustainability claims significantly impact 44% of coffee consumers when making their purchasing decisions. Notably, one in five respondents stated they would reconsider their purchase if a coffee product appeared unsustainable.

“Coffee roasters are actively looking for ways to be more sustainable,” said Giorgio Dini, Marketing Manager for Coffee at Amcor. “At the same time, they must preserve the freshness and aroma of their coffee, so any packaging change, first and foremost, needs to maintain product quality. Our AmPrima® Plus is the perfect solution for Nordic coffee leader Kjeldsberg, with whom we won this award. It is a mono-PE pouch that offers a high barrier to prolong the freshness of coffee. It runs seamlessly on coffee roasters’ packing machines and is readily recyclable in most European countries, as certified by Institute cyclos-HTP.”

Designed in alignment with the Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging (CEFLEX) guidelines, AmPrima® Plus helps brands transition from a multi-material, non-recyclable structure to a mono-material solution that facilitates easy recycling and enhances brand sustainability commitments.

To ensure coffee brands do not compromise on sustainability while maintaining performance, AmPrima® Plus has been optimized for efficient production line operations and preserves optimal oxygen and moisture barriers.

“For many years, the Packaging Innovation Awards and Dow have inspired more sustainable packaging innovation. Amcor shares a commitment to a more circular economy and has pledged to develop all our packaging to be recyclable, reusable, or compostable by 2025. As of fiscal year 2024, 94% of our global flexible packaging portfolio has a recycle-ready solution available,” Mr. Dini noted. “Our award-winning coffee pouch is one of these solutions.”
