AkzoNobel Packaging Coatings has introduced the SecurshieldTM 500 Series, a PVC-free and Bisphenol-free internal coating designed for easy open food can ends. This innovative product not only meets current and future regulatory standards but also offers enhanced sustainability and performance compared to existing organosol-based coatings in the market.
Transitioning to the SecurshieldTM 500 Series is seamless, making it suitable for a wide range of metal food packs. Coil coaters can now use this technology to cater to different needs across various food can manufacturers. This launch comes at a critical time as the European Commission phases out Bisphenols, and concerns over plastics in food packaging continue to rise.
The new PVC-free, BPXni internal coating for easy open ends comes in aluminum or gold sizecoat options with a gold topcoat, applied with rollers for optimized line efficiency. Its improved chemical resistance makes it suitable for a variety of food types, from vegetables to fish and fruit.
Chris Bradford, Industrial Coatings Marketing Director at AkzoNobel, believes that the SecurshieldTM 500 Series will facilitate a smoother transition to a Bisphenol-free and PVC-free future for customers. “We are committed to developing products free from materials of concern to address industry challenges and ensure compliance with evolving regulations,” he states.
The release of the SecurshieldTM 500 Series is part of AkzoNobel’s commitment to a Bisphenol-free future, with additional solutions under the Securshield™ and Securstyle™ product names to be introduced. This portfolio expansion follows the launch of next-generation coatings for beverage cans, providing safe alternatives for challenging foods and liquids.
