In a significant milestone for Bertie’s Bakery, the family firm has secured a lucrative contract with Tesco, resulting in the expansion of their product range and the creation of new employment opportunities.
The contract, valued at approximately £2 million in projected annual sales, has paved the way for the availability of 12 Bertie’s Bakery product lines in Tesco’s 19 Express format stores across Northern Ireland since the beginning of October.
This initial phase will be followed by the introduction of 30 additional product lines into 24 Tesco Superstores. The expanded range includes a wide variety of goods such as hot plate items, freshly baked goods, and a delectable assortment of cakes and pastries.
Bertie’s Bakery, founded by Brian McErlain in 2020, currently operates from a state-of-the-art 15,000 sq ft facility in the vicinity of Magherafelt. The facility proudly holds BRC AA* accreditation.
This exciting partnership has not only led to the introduction of new products but has also contributed to the job creation within the company. A total of 12 new positions will be filled across various departments, including Bakery and Sales personnel, resulting in a total workforce of 45 individuals.
Gareth Morton, the head of category commercial NI at Tesco, expressed his enthusiasm about supporting local suppliers and emphasized the company’s commitment to enhance and diversify its offering. Of particular significance is Bertie’s Bakery, a long-established local business in Northern Ireland, whose products will now be accessible to Tesco’s customer base.
Apart from the 12 new product lines, Bertie’s Bakery is also introducing an impressive range of 90 new offerings, which include hot plate goods, freshly baked rolls and scones, oven bread, as well as an array of delectable cakes and pastries.
