PepsiCo UK & Ireland has made its biggest investment in the country in the last 25 years, with a £58 million commitment to upgrade its Leicester factory where Walkers crisps and snacks are produced. The multi-faceted investment focuses on four key areas, with particular emphasis on sustainability and packaging. The new manufacturing line is set to increase capacity, while replacing existing machinery with more sustainable equipment, including electric ovens, will help cut greenhouse gas emissions and boost efforts to reach net-zero emissions by 2040. The upgrades also include installing new compact packaging equipment, reducing the amount of virgin plastic used in multipack outer packaging, and introducing healthier snack options.
The investment also prioritizes employees, with an extensive upgrade of employee facilities, including new training and up-skilling opportunities, up to 100 new roles, and a major refurbishment of employee facilities, such as training areas, a new on-site restaurant, modern meeting rooms, and a dedicated celebration space nearing completion.
Jason Richards, Senior Vice President & General Manager at PepsiCo UK & Ireland, has emphasized the company’s commitment to Leicester, a city that has played a crucial role in its success over the years. Richards stated, “As we look ahead to the next 75 years and future-proof our UK operations, this £58 million investment will transform our manufacturing site and installing state-of-the-art equipment will help us deliver on our ambitions on packaging and health.”
This investment builds on previous efforts by PepsiCo, which has invested more than £120 million in UK manufacturing operations and supply chains since 2020. The funding reflects a strategic commitment to sustainable growth and long-term success for the company and the Leicester factory.
With its focus on sustainability, health, and growth, this investment will help position Walkers for further success in the future. The company’s strategic approach to investment highlights the significance of responsible food manufacturing in the UK and sets an example for others in the industry to follow.
