During an interview with the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show, Yousaf was asked about requests for compensation. He stated that “We don’t believe there’s a case for the Scottish government to need to compensate because the action we’ve had to take is because of that 11th hour, last-minute intervention from the UK Government, which has meant that a Scottish scheme, unfortunately, isn’t viable.”

However, Razzaq from The Fed strongly contests Yousaf’s stance and believes that the Scottish government should take responsibility for compensating affected parties. According to Razzaq, the Scottish government “told us repeatedly to get ready for this scheme.” As a result, some shopkeepers took out leasing contracts and are now paying almost £4,000 per year for redundant machines to process returned bottles and cans. Retailers have also paid thousands for structures to house the machines outside or shop fitting to accommodate them inside. These expenses are a burden for business owners, especially given the fragile economic existence of small shops in Scotland. “The Scottish government’s claim to seek an improved relationship with business will have faint credibility if it seeks to evade paying compensation,” added Razzaq.

It is important for the Scottish government to acknowledge the financial strains on businesses that made investments in preparation for the now-defunct scheme. They should consider compensating these affected parties to maintain credibility in their relationship with small businesses.
