In 2024, exports of Irish whiskey surpassed an impressive €1 billion. Recent data from Bord Bia and the International Wine and Spirits Record (IWSR) reveals that Irish whiskey sales exceeded 15 million cases last year, indicative of sustained global demand. Notably, exports to India surged by a remarkable 107%, establishing it as the fastest-growing market.

Eoin Ó Catháin, Director of the Irish Whiskey Association, stated, “The success of the Irish whiskey sector is due to the innovation, resilience, and hard work of our Irish whiskey producers – passionate distillers that are found in almost every county in Ireland, deeply proud of the heritage of Irish whiskey. Last year, we celebrated 700 Years of Irish Whiskey Tradition: 700 years since the publication of the Red Book of Ossory, with its instructions for distilling aqua vitae – oruisce beatha – which, of course, we know today as whiskey. The ongoing hard work and ingenuity of Irish whiskey producers provides a solid platform for the next 700 years!”

The Irish Whiskey Association serves as the representative trade association for the Irish whiskey sector, advocating for 48 whiskey companies across the island.

Irish whiskey is predominantly an international product — Ireland exports 90% of its production. This premium spirit increasingly captures interest in new and emerging markets. Since 1989, Irish whiskey has held Geographical Indication (GI) status, meaning it can only be distilled on the island of Ireland, adhering to strict production standards. Currently, Irish whiskey is available in 113 markets, with over 90% of these markets enjoying legal protection.

Beyond exports, Irish whiskey significantly contributes to the Irish economy. The brewing and distilling sector supports over 10,000 jobs, simultaneously boosting employment in hospitality, tourism, and agriculture. To further this impact, Irish Whiskey 360° was established by the Irish Whiskey Association to promote distillery tours and visitor experiences for both domestic and international tourists. With over 800,000 visitors to member distilleries last year, it is clear that interest in the story of Irish whiskey, through its unique brands and distilleries, continues to grow.
