Carling is set to transform the beer aisle with its most significant brand update in more than 30 years.

Launching from October 2026, the wide-ranging redesign aims to attract a new generation of beer drinkers while retaining the brewing heritage that has defined the brand for decades. The move reflects wider food and beverage industry trends, including the growing focus on distinctive branding, food and drink consumer trends, and stronger retail visibility.

A contemporary identity with strong heritage cues

The new identity delivers a more powerful and modern presence, helping Carling stand out in an increasingly competitive retail environment. Although the refreshed badge has a sharper, more confident appearance, the design continues to draw on the brand’s longstanding heritage.

Several elements connect the new look to Carling’s roots. Illustrations reference the historic Carling Brewery, while the inclusion of 100% British barley highlights the locally sourced ingredient used in the lager. The design also features Burton upon Trent, recognising the renowned brewing town that remains central to Molson Coors’ UK operations.

This balance between heritage and modernity reflects broader food manufacturing trends, where established brands are updating their visual identities without losing the characteristics that consumers recognise and trust. It also aligns with developments across food and drink packaging, as brands seek stronger shelf presence through clearer and more distinctive design.

Building on a successful launch

Carling first introduced the refreshed badge on Carling Black Label, its first new lager launch in more than a decade. Since arriving in stores in March 2026, the product has generated £4.5 million in sales across the GB off-trade.

The updated identity will now appear across the broader Carling portfolio, creating a unified and more premium presentation across cans and multipacks.

Research with consumers showed that the new branding connected effectively with a wide range of demographics. In particular, shoppers who were less familiar with Carling considered the design relevant and distinctive on the shelf. That result is especially important in the core lager category, where brand visibility can significantly influence purchasing decisions.

The refresh also demonstrates how food and drink industry innovation extends beyond food processing technology. In a crowded market, packaging, brand recognition and consumer engagement remain essential components of commercial growth, alongside wider food distribution trends and evolving food and drink marketing strategies.

Football and retail support underpin the campaign

Carling will use football as a central platform for the rollout, building on the sport’s strong connection with the brand. It remains the core lager most closely associated with football among UK consumers and will continue its role as the Official Beer Partner of the Emirates FA Cup.

Ryan McLaughlin, brand director for Carling at Molson Coors Beverage Company, explained the strategy behind the refresh: “Core lager has an important role to play in the off-trade. Familiarity matters at the beer fixture, which is why we’ve retained the elements of Carling that people know and recognise… Following the launch of Carling Black Label earlier this year, this refresh is another step in strengthening the wider Carling range and helping a new generation of shoppers see the brand as one for them.”

An above-the-line campaign platform is scheduled for the year ahead. Alongside the new identity, the programme is expected to give retailers greater shelf impact, support increased store visits and maintain strong brand activity around major sporting and social occasions.

As brands respond to changing food and drink regulations, shifting expectations around food and drink sustainability and emerging food and drink consumer trends, Carling’s redesign illustrates the continued importance of combining recognisable brand assets with a contemporary market proposition.
