The food and beverage industry is witnessing a new trend towards regenerative agriculture, and US giant PepsiCo has joined forces with retail heavyweight Walmart to drive this sustainable farming initiative. This collaboration aims to improve soil health and water quality on millions of acres of farmland in the US and Canada. Over the next seven years, both companies will invest $120 million in this venture, with the goal of achieving four million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions and removals by 2030.
PepsiCo’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Jim Andrew, explains that for regenerative agriculture to succeed, farmers require economic, social, and agronomic support. This strategic partnership with Walmart will provide the necessary assistance to transform farming practices for the benefit of the planet and people. This collaboration marks a significant investment for both companies in promoting sustainable agriculture.
PepsiCo has been actively involved in similar initiatives in the past. In 2021, the company launched an internal co-investment fund to incentivize innovative solutions that align with their Positive Agriculture agenda, granting $1.8 million to date. Additionally, PepsiCo entered into a commercial agreement with ADM in September 2022, with the objective of expanding regenerative agriculture across their shared North American supply chains. In March of this year, the company made a $216 million investment in strategic partnership agreements with farmer-facing organizations, such as the Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), Soil and Water Outcomes Fund (SWOF), and the Illinois Corn Growers Association (ICGA).
This latest collaboration with Walmart represents PepsiCo’s first large-scale partnership with a retailer, and it allows them to combine their size and scale to offer a flexible and voluntary approach to regenerative agriculture. The company is working alongside renowned organizations like the World Wildlife Fund, the Sustainable Markets Initiative, and the Science Based Targets Network to ensure credible measurement of regenerative agriculture outcomes.
PepsiCo’s commitment to regenerative agriculture extends to its environmental, social, and governance efforts. The company has reported an increase in its regenerative farming footprint to over 900,000 acres globally, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable farming practices. To engage consumers in their agricultural initiatives, PepsiCo launched the Lay’s Golden Grows Here campaign, which highlights the sustainably sourced potatoes used in Lay’s products and the farms responsible for their cultivation.
Regenerative agriculture, with its focus on topsoil regeneration, biodiversity, and resilience to climate change, is gaining momentum in the food and beverage industry. This collaboration between PepsiCo and Walmart is a significant step toward a more sustainable future for farming.
