Unilever has committed to uphold the employment conditions for its workforce in the UK and European food sectors for two years following its merger with the US spice manufacturer McCormick.

According to an internal memo reported by Reuters, these safeguards will remain in effect for employees within the anticipated McCormick-Unilever Foods entity until at least mid-2029.

This arrangement extends beyond the typical one-year timeframe that allows for the renegotiation of contracts and collective bargaining agreements in accordance with UK and EU regulations.

The deal, reached in March between Unilever and McCormick, is expected to finalize by mid-2027, pending necessary regulatory approvals and stipulated conditions. The merger attributes an approximate value of $44.8 billion to Unilever’s food division, while the aggregate valuation of the combined corporation stands around $65 billion.

This merger aims to establish an independent food company and is part of Unilever’s broader strategy to streamline its portfolio, focusing on core consumer brands.

Unilever has indicated progress in its discussions with various European and national works councils, emphasizing commitments regarding employment terms and consultation processes. Ongoing negotiations are anticipated to continue throughout the summer as preparations for the transaction advance.
