The BTOM is a crucial document that outlines the levels of sanitary checks on food products imported into Great Britain and was introduced in 2020 following the UK’s exit from the EU. The document categorizes food products as high, medium, or low-risk to health and specifies the level of checks required for each category. It also introduces a trusted trader scheme that removes certain checks for vetted traders. The BTOM is important for European countries wanting to trade with Great Britain and focuses on imports from the EU, while it does not have much impact on British exports. The Food Standards Authority is closely involved in the plan to ensure food and feed safety and consumer protection while constantly evaluating the risk environment. The document will bring changes to the border restrictions and will be implemented in three phases starting from October 31, 2021, and covering health certifications, documentary and risk-based identity and physical checks, and safety, and security declarations. The BTOM has resulted in medium-risk products from Europe with no border checks experiencing changes. The document also introduces trusted trader schemes for animal and plant products, allowing certain traders to go through the border with fewer checks following a long vetting process to ensure their trustworthiness.
