With the rising costs of food, businesses in the food and beverage industry are facing financial challenges. One major expense contributing to this struggle is energy costs, which account for about 15% of total expenses for the average food business. A significant portion of this energy is wasted, mainly in the form of heat.
Enjay has developed a groundbreaking heat exchanger technology called Lepido, which enables businesses to reduce wasted heat and save substantial amounts of energy. This technology has already been successful in restaurants and was recently implemented in Lantmännen’s pancake factory, Europe’s largest of its kind, located in Laholm, Sweden. The adoption of Lepido resulted in an annual energy savings of 1.5 million kWh and £112,000 for the factory.
Enjay’s founder and CEO, Jesper Wirén, revealed that a staggering 75% of the energy produced by food businesses is wasted and released into the atmosphere. This wasted energy could potentially be enough to heat all of Europe. Enjay found that the lack of heat recovery in process ventilation, particularly in the food industry, was a major contributor to this waste. The ventilation systems were not equipped to recover and utilize the lost heat due to the pollutants present in the air stream, such as grease, soot, and humidity.
Lepido stands out as the world’s first heat exchanger capable of operating effectively in such hostile environments without requiring prefiltration or extra maintenance. It has a unique coil design that allows pollutants to pass through the system, preventing clogging and ensuring optimal performance. This innovative technology eliminates the need for food businesses to purchase excessive amounts of energy, resulting in significant cost savings.
In addition to cost savings, Enjay’s technology is environmentally friendly. Lepido not only reduces energy consumption but also contributes to a reduction in CO2 emissions. On average, a single restaurant emits between twenty and twenty-five tonnes of fossil CO2 per year. If all restaurants globally were to adopt Enjay’s technology, this could potentially reduce up to 1% of global CO2 emissions, equivalent to about 0.5 gigatons.
For Enjay, the financial benefits and the environmental impact are closely intertwined. By creating a financial incentive for businesses to save money, they also motivate them to contribute to climate change mitigation. The more money businesses save, the greater the positive impact on the environment.
Overall, Enjay’s Lepido technology offers a game-changing solution for food businesses struggling with rising energy costs. By utilizing this innovative heat exchanger, businesses can significantly reduce wasted heat, save money, and work towards a more sustainable future.
