Private-equity group acquires Molino Nicoli

Private-equity group acquires Molino Nicoli Bakery and Cereal Food and Beverage Business

Italy’s Clessidra Private Equity SGR has acquired Molino Nicoli, a local better-for-you cereals manufacturer, from the Nicoli family. The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, but the Nicoli family has reinvested a 30% stake as part of the acquisition.

The investment in Molino Nicoli will be made from the Clessidra Capital Partners 4 fund. The company produces organic and gluten-free breakfast cereals, baby snacks, and cereal bars under the Vitabella brand for the US and European markets. In addition, they produce private-label products including muesli, granola, oat flakes, snack bars, and baby food snacks such as puffed corn.

Francesco Colli, managing director at Clessidra Private Equity, expressed the company’s intention to further extend Molino Nicoli’s leadership position in both Europe and the US. He stated, “Based on current success, we will identify adequate targets across core regions to accelerate the already outlined growth path.”

Andrea Ottaviano, CEO of the private-equity firm, added, “We are thrilled to partner with Molino Nicoli, which over the last years has established itself as the partner of choice for primary operators in modern distribution, both in Italy and abroad.” He highlighted the company’s consistent expansion in reference markets, generating double-digit revenue growth for 20 years.

Molino Nicoli, located north-east of Milan in Costa di Mazzate, manages two gluten- and allergen-free production plants and operates a commercial unit in Connecticut, USA. The company reported annual turnover of approximately €60m ($65.14m) in 2023, with half of the revenues coming from international markets. The focus remains on quality, traceability, and clean label products.

The acquisition of Molino Nicoli by Clessidra Private Equity SGR reflects a strategic move to strengthen the company’s presence in the healthy food products market. The goal is to build a leading platform in the industry, with an emphasis on quality and sustainability. This partnership marks a significant step towards achieving growth and success in the food and beverage industry.
