Prima Bakeries Group, a prominent player in the food and beverage industry, has recently acquired the UK-based biscuit manufacturer Furniss of Cornwall. This merger, finalized for an undisclosed amount, unites two well-established businesses within the same town of Redruth in Cornwall, southwest England.

In their announcement, Prima Bakeries Group, which operates both Prima Bakeries and Cornish Premier Pasties, stated plans to construct a new 20,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in St. Columb, Cornwall, later this year. This expansion is poised to enhance operational capabilities in the competitive food and drink business landscape.

Additionally, the group has committed to investing in the Furniss facility in Redruth to increase production of its cookies and biscuits. Importantly, all 30 employees at Furniss will retain their positions, including managing director Des Bell, ensuring continuity and stability in operations.

Founded in 1886 by John Furniss as a tea shop in Truro, Furniss holds the distinction of being the sole licensed producer of The Original Cornish Fairing, a traditional ginger biscuit associated with Cornwall. The company’s heritage enhances its value in the food and drink consumer trends associated with regional products.

Mark Norton, managing director of Prima Bakeries Group, emphasized the significance of this acquisition, stating, “This is an incredibly exciting time for us as we bring another iconic Cornish food brand under our wing.” He highlighted the synergy between the two businesses, noting their complementary product offerings and the responsibility to build upon the legacy of previous ownership.

Alongside its classic Cornish pasties, Prima Bakeries produces a diverse array of baked goods, including sausage rolls, pies, cakes, and bread. Since acquiring Cornish Premier Pasties in 2020, the group anticipates a combined turnover of £15 million ($19.6 million) this year.

Recent financial filings reveal that Prima Bakeries Group achieved a 17.8% increase in turnover, reaching £11.8 million for the year ending August 31, 2023. Despite a slight drop in net profit to £908,530 from the previous year, the company reported a profit before tax of over £1.2 million.

As of December 2023, Prima Bakeries Group transitioned into an Employee Ownership Trust, reinforcing its commitment to employee engagement and investment in the local community. This acquisition not only strengthens their position in the food and beverage industry but also aligns with current trends prioritizing regional and heritage brands in consumer preferences.
