Dutch poultry manufacturer Plukon Food Group has acquired Spanish poultry producer Sambau, enhancing its presence in the food and beverage industry.

Financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, signaling a strategic move by Plukon to tap into the Spanish market and leverage mutual knowledge and capacity with Sambau to drive growth and offer new possibilities to customers in the region of Madrid.

Founded in 1986, Sambau, a family-run business, specializes in distributing and processing a variety of chicken products for the Spanish market, achieving annual revenues of €21m ($22.5m) in 2023 with 56 employees based at its headquarters in Madrid.

Plukon’s CEO Kees Kraijenoord expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing the creation of synergies for customers through the collaboration with Sambau. This acquisition marks Plukon’s fourth in the past year, underscoring its strategic expansion in the European market.

The group’s acquisition of Grupo de Gestión Empresarial Avícola (VMR) in 2020 and Redondo in 2021 laid the foundation for its growth in Spain, with Sambau further solidifying its position. Plukon’s recent acquisitions, including Algas SP assets and a stake in JA ter Maten, demonstrate its commitment to enhancing production capacity and product offerings.

Operated from Wezep, Plukon boasts an annual turnover of €3.1bn in 2023, manufacturing a diverse range of chicken products, meat alternatives, ready meals, and salads across its six markets, including the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, and Spain.

Plukon’s strategic acquisitions align with its goal of meeting the evolving demands of the food and beverage industry, enhancing its competitive edge. The group’s investment in markets like Spain reflects a proactive approach to capturing new opportunities and expanding its market presence.
