Amalgamated Sugar, a leading US sugar producer in the food and beverage industry, has announced the appointment of Fran Malecha as its new CEO. Malecha will be stepping in for the retiring John McCreedy at the end of July. With over eight years of experience as CEO and president of Amalgamated Sugar, McCreedy has left a strong legacy for Malecha to uphold.
Fran Malecha brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served as the CEO of Compass Minerals, a prominent US salt and plant-nutrition business. Prior to that, he held the position of COO at Viterra, a grain-handling company based in Canada. Malecha’s diverse leadership experience makes him the ideal candidate to lead Amalgamated Sugar into its next chapter of success.
Founded in 1902, Amalgamated Sugar is renowned for its commitment to high standards in the sugarbeet processing industry. The company’s three factories in Idaho collectively produce an impressive 2.2 billion pounds of sugar annually, making a significant contribution to the food and beverage sector. With a dedicated workforce of approximately 1,700 employees, Amalgamated Sugar has solidified its position as a trusted leader in the industry.
Malecha expressed his enthusiasm for taking on the role, stating, “Amalgamated Sugar’s strong reputation and track record of excellence in production agriculture and factory operations make it a privilege to lead this esteemed organization. I look forward to continuing the legacy of providing value to our shareholders and promoting growth in the sugarbeet processing industry.”
Mike Garner, the chairman of Amalgamated Sugar, lauded the appointment, remarking, “We are thrilled to welcome Fran Malecha to our team. His proven track record of leadership, performance, growth, and value creation across multiple industries makes him an ideal fit for our company. As we bid farewell to John McCreedy, we express our deep gratitude for his invaluable contributions to our employees and shareholders.”
During the transition period, John McCreedy will remain with the company as an advisor, leveraging his extensive knowledge and expertise gained from his tenure since joining in 2004.
In a move that strengthened its position in the industry, Amalgamated Sugar recently formed a strategic partnership with local peer Snake River Sugar Company. This collaboration has resulted in the creation of a grower-owned cooperative that is now recognized as the second-largest manufacturer of sugar from sugarbeets in the United States.
Amalgamated Sugar’s appointment of Fran Malecha as CEO underscores the company’s commitment to maintaining its position as a trusted leader in the food and beverage industry. With his extensive leadership experience and proven track record, Malecha is poised to steer Amalgamated Sugar towards continued growth and success.
