Intersnack Acquires Whole Earth Peanut Butter from Ecotone Ecotone, Intersnack Food and Beverage Business

Intersnack has officially acquired the Whole Earth peanut butter brand from Ecotone, a prominent European food group. This strategic move aims to enhance Intersnack’s foothold in the food and beverage industry, especially in the growing organic peanut butter segment.

The financial details of the transaction, executed through Intersnack’s KP Snacks division based in Germany, have not been publicly disclosed. Ecotone is recognized for offering a diverse range of products, including nut butters and soft drinks, under the Whole Earth label.

Mark Thorpe, CEO of KP Snacks, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “Whole Earth Foods is a fantastic addition to our business, expanding our selection of delicious, healthier products. Known for its commitment to high-quality, nutritious food, Whole Earth Foods complements our portfolio of iconic brands and aligns with our sustainable business practices.”

Since its acquisition by Ecotone in 2003, Whole Earth has experienced exceptional growth, with sales reportedly increasing ”fivefold.” The brand now stands as the leading peanut butter option in the UK, as confirmed by the France-based company.

Ecotone’s CEO, Christophe Barnouin, highlighted the sale as a testament to the brand’s impressive 22-year journey, evolving from a British startup into a key player in the European market. He further noted, “This sale is an acknowledgement of Ecotone’s 22 years of sustainable growth with the Whole Earth brand. The integration into KP Snacks will enable Whole Earth Foods to continue to invest and grow for the future.”

Furthermore, Ecotone has reported noteworthy growth in the organic peanut butter category across various European markets, including Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, and Italy.

Headquartered in Lyon, Ecotone employs around 1,600 individuals and boasts a brand portfolio that includes Abbot Kinney’s plant-based dairy alternatives and Clipper tea. Intersnack’s KP Snacks, which employs over 2,200 people in the UK, operates seven manufacturing facilities and features a portfolio of well-known snack brands, such as McCoy’s, Hula Hoops, and Tyrrells.
