Spain’s Ángel Camacho, the proprietor of the Fragata table olive brand, has officially acquired the Portuguese company Maçarico. This strategic move represents an important expansion for Ángel Camacho into Portuguese and Brazilian markets, although Maçarico already services a diverse portfolio of 50 countries across five continents.
Ángel Camacho, a family-owned business based in Sevilla, manufactures table olives, olive oil, pickles, sauces, and condiments, similar to its new Portuguese counterpart. While Maçarico markets products under its namesake brand, Ángel Camacho boasts a range of offerings, including La Vieja Fábrica jams, Mario olives, oils, tapenade, and Susaron functional teas. Notably, Maçarico also produces piri-piri and soy sauces, distinguishing it further in the competitive food and beverage industry.
Established in 1930, Maçarico operates two production facilities located in Praia de Mira and Cantanhede, close to Aveiro, approximately 100 kilometers from Porto. In a recent LinkedIn announcement, Ángel Camacho described this acquisition as part of their strategic plan for 2024-2026, which focuses on diversifying products and entering new markets.
“This acquisition reinforces Ángel Camacho’s global position, expanding its offer and consolidating its international presence, with a focus on sustainability and quality,” the company emphasized.
Ángel Camacho, which also owns the Loreto brand—known for its table olives, capers, and olive oils—did not disclose the purchase price for Maçarico in its social media communications. Founded in 1897, Ángel Camacho runs five production plants: three in Spain and one each in the United States and the United Kingdom. Its products reach numerous markets across Europe, Asia, and Russia.
The acquisition of Maçarico is the latest in a series of strategic investments by Ángel Camacho, which reported sales of €252 million ($278.5 million) in 2022. Last year, they also invested in Italian snacks and the canned fruit and vegetable supplier Sama. Moreover, their investments over the past two years have included Mani Foods in Greece, another supplier of table olives and cooking oils, as well as Cartier Saada, a producer based in Morocco.
