The National Lottery celebrated a strong performance for the year 2022/23, with returns to Good Causes from ticket sales alone reaching an all-time high of £1,807.0m, up £6.2m from the previous year. This achievement is further validated by the fact that over the same period, The National Lottery awarded £4,694.0m in prize money to players – up £81.7m and second highest-ever amount awarded. Furthermore, the organization created 382 new millionaires, comparable to over one a day.

Five out of the total number of EuroMillions jackpots, which were scooped in the UK, were won by three extremely lucky players, resulting in them instantly becoming the UK’s three biggest-ever winners. Including unclaimed prizes, a total of £1,877.3m was generated for Good Causes over the period, equivalent to an average of £36m every week.

The organization has raised more than £47bn since 1994 for National Lottery projects, while generating £3.1bn for society through Good Causes, Lottery Duty, and retailer commission.

Camelot Co-CEOs, Clare Swindell, and Neil Brocklehurst expressed their delight at the growth in National Lottery sales year-on-year, which created almost 400 millionaires while generating returns from ticket sales rising to their best-ever level. They stated that it is evidence that The National Lottery is delivering for players and society in challenging times.

Camelot continues to invest and support its National Lottery retail partners, with its in-store standards and rewards program boosting National Lottery retailers’ income by awarding almost £540,000 in cash rewards to independent shopkeepers. Moreover, the 43,000-strong network of National Lottery retailers shared a total of £254.7m in sales commission over the year, working out at around £6,000 per store, with over £7.7bn paid in commission to retailers since 1994.

For the year 2022/23, EuroMillions helped propel draw-based games sales to £4,739.4m, up £91.9m with 30 draws offering jackpots of over £100m driving both player excitement and sales. Lotto continued to perform steadily, creating 134 new millionaires despite seeing fewer sales-driving ‘Must Be Won’ draws over the period.

Camelot also launched a series of events such as The National Lottery’s Big Bash and Big Night of Musicals, both of which saw thousands of National Lottery players come together to enjoy spectacular musical and theatrical performances. The National Lottery’s Open Week also offered free access to dozens of lottery-funded venues across the UK.

Moving forward, Camelot is committed to ensuring The National Lottery remains front of mind, hosting events such as The National Lottery’s Big Eurovision Welcome and supporting UK communities in hosting street parties and get-togethers. It is clear that The National Lottery implements social responsibility while simultaneously delivering its services to society.
