Scotland has seen strong growth in several categories, including crisps, snacks, and nuts, with an increase of 21.4%. Chilled products have also seen a significant rise of 18.5%. Confectionery has experienced a growth rate of 15.2%, while soft drinks have seen a steady increase of 10.9%. These figures are according to the analyst’s SmartView Convenience market read.

However, not all categories have performed as well. Tobacco sales have decreased by 2.5%, wines and spirits by 3%, and beer and cider by 4.3%. Additionally, newspapers and magazines have seen a decline of 23%.

To gather these insights, a survey was conducted among a representative sample of around 5,000 independent retail and wholesalers in Great Britain.

In a separate consumer study commissioned by TWC, 800 Scottish consumers were asked about the value of local independent convenience stores to their community. The top response was that these stores are “open and available when consumers need them”. Additionally, consumers appreciate the job opportunities these stores provide to the local community.

Maintaining a sense of community is another important aspect highlighted by Scottish consumers. Independent convenience stores play a crucial role in fostering community spirit in the area. Moreover, consumers value the efforts made by retailers to support them, such as keeping prices competitive and offering attractive deals, offers, and promotions.

Tom Fender, development director at TWC, expresses optimism regarding the independent retail sector in Scotland. With inflation decreasing and consumer confidence on the rise, there is room for growth and success. Consumers recognize the significance of their local stores, considering them an integral part of their community.

In conclusion, Scotland’s independent retail sector has shown resilience, and consumer support remains strong. The continuous growth in certain categories and the appreciation for local convenience stores highlight their importance in the community. With favorable economic conditions, the future looks promising for the sector.
