The latest data from the wholesale and convenience data experts reveals strong value performance in several impulse categories. Soft drinks experienced a remarkable increase of 15.7%, while confectionery saw an impressive growth of 19.8%. Additionally, crisps, snacks, and nuts witnessed a substantial rise of 21.0%. Overall, total sales through the channel showed a significant 5.0% growth in value terms for the 13-week period ending on July 9, 2023.
Tom Fender, the development director at TWC, commented on these results. Despite facing tough trading conditions, value sales through the independent convenience channel managed to increase by 5% in the last 13 weeks. This growth can be attributed to the strong performance of impulse categories, particularly in the last four weeks which were characterized by warm weather.
Although tobacco sales experienced a decline of 3%, it remains a crucial driver of footfall. On the other hand, vape sales continue to expand rapidly. Despite ongoing promotional activities in supermarkets, beers and lagers also showed modest growth.
