Spain’s Noel Alimentaria has strategically acquired a 25% stake in fellow Iberian meat company, Garrudo Benito.
While the financial specifics of the transaction remain undisclosed, Noel expressed intentions to gradually increase its ownership in the family-owned Garrudo Benito to 50% by 2028.
This acquisition aims to enhance Noel’s presence in the Iberian meat sector and ensure a stable supply of raw materials for both fresh and processed products in the medium and long term.
Albert Boix, managing director of Noel, stated: “With this alliance, we are consolidating a project that combines tradition, quality, and an international outlook. Garrudo brings excellence, expertise, and distinctive, premium products.”
Founded in 1967, Garrudo Benito, headquartered in Piedrahíta, maintains connections to the UK market through its partnership with Marks & Spencer.
The company operates the sole Iberian pig slaughterhouse and cutting plant approved by this major UK retailer.
Noel specializes in the production and distribution of cooked and cured ham, charcuterie, fresh meats, and ready-made items such as pizzas, vegetable creams, and juices. Their brand portfolio includes Delizias Finas, Delizias Pétalos, and Fuet/Serrano.
Additionally, the Girona-based ham producer aims to double Iberian product sales and facilitate international expansion through collaboration with Garrudo Benito.
Both companies recognize the increasing consumption of Iberian ham in Spain and abroad, particularly emphasizing the popularity of 100% acorn-fed varieties.
Their investment strategy encompasses a new curing facility in Piedrahíta, which will support a capacity of 500,000 Iberian hams annually.
Furthermore, the partnership includes joint product development and innovative formats, including sliced options, designed for gourmet and mass retail channels both in Spain and international markets.
Just Food has reached out to both companies seeking more details regarding their current overseas markets, targeted destinations, and annual revenue figures.
María Garrudo, managing director of Garrudo, remarked: “This collaboration allows us to combine our tradition and know-how in producing Iberian products with Noel’s international reach, and to open up new market opportunities to continue offering products of the highest quality.”
