World Food Day is an international day of action against hunger, celebrated annually on 16 October. This year’s theme is ‘Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together’.
The event commemorates the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945, aiming to raise awareness about the global issue of hunger.
According to climate action NGO, WRAP, UK households and businesses wastefully discard around 9.5 million tonnes of food each year. Gander, a leading technology provider, offers a practical solution to combat food waste.
By partnering with 548 stores, Gander’s platform has successfully saved 30 million food items from being wasted, preventing the emission of 31,600 tons of CO2 into the environment.
Sanchia Newman, Gander’s head of international sales, urged individuals across the country to join their efforts in reducing food waste on this World Food Day, stating, “Households and businesses generate an astronomical amount of food waste each year. Together, we can put an end to this issue.”
Established in 2019, Gander’s technology empowers retailers and consumers to make a difference. By integrating with retailers’ point of sale systems, the platform helps improve sell-through rates, reduce markdown loss, enhance in-store compliance and shrinkage, all while minimizing food waste.
Gander’s live interface provides real-time information on reduced food items, enabling consumers to search for discounts in their local area and view temporary promotions at stores. This actively supports individuals in making the most of their weekly food budgets while playing a vital role in reducing food waste.
By actively participating in the battle against food waste, we can foster growth, nourishment, and sustainability for our communities. Together, let’s make a difference this World Food Day.
