A wide range of single-use plastics, including products labeled as compostable, recycled, and biodegradable, will be prohibited.
This ban also includes polystyrene food and drink containers.
Rebecca Pow, the environment minister, has already implemented bans on straws, stirrers, and cotton buds. Additionally, charges for carrier bags and an industry tax on large plastic packaging imports have been introduced.
According to Pow, this latest ban aims to safeguard the environment and reduce litter, preventing plastic pollution from contaminating streets and endangering wildlife.
The Local Government Association (LGA) is urging the Government to go even further by implementing extended producer responsibility measures. This would incentivize producers and companies to minimize waste and adopt recyclable packaging.
Cllr Darren Rodwell, the LGA’s environment spokesperson, emphasized that councils believe businesses are willing to comply with the new regulations and minimize plastic waste. However, there are concerns that some local businesses and consumers may be unaware of the impending ban on these materials. Rodwell encourages everyone to familiarize themselves with the affected materials highlighted in the ban.
While this policy is a positive step towards waste reduction, there is still more to be done. The LGA is eager for the Government to implement Extended Producer Responsibility, which would encourage producers to reduce waste and increase the use of recyclable packaging. This would also enable councils to collaborate with communities to enhance recycling efforts.
The hospitality trade must accelerate its transformation, as non-compliance may result in fines. This sector will be significantly impacted due to the inclusion of both new and existing stocks of plastic items that businesses will need to dispose of.
