Ahlstrom and The Paper People have collaborated to introduce a groundbreaking solution for sustainable frozen food packaging. This innovative line of fully fibre-based, recyclability-certified packaging aims to replace conventional fossil-based plastics and films commonly used in the frozen food industry.

Neil Bretl, President for The Paper People, emphasized, “This new packaging is designed to seamlessly integrate into existing packaging equipment, including vertical form-fill-seal, stand-up pouches, and SOS style systems. We have worked diligently to ensure that these materials can easily replace traditional non-renewable substrates on existing machinery.”

The paper-based frozen food packaging incorporates The Paper People’s Paperlock G technology, which is FDA approved for direct food contact and serves as a heat-seal material and grease barrier. This advanced feature effectively prevents grease from migrating off food products like fries, tater tots, onion rings, and pizza rolls, enhancing the packaging’s performance. Furthermore, this packaging can be customized with vibrant, up to 10-color prints using both flexographic and digital printing techniques. It also offers the option of a compostable zipper in standard and inno-lok style configurations.

Combining The Paper People’s cutting-edge technology with Ahlstrom’s proprietary FluoroFree barrier papers, this sustainable packaging solution achieves remarkable grease-resistance while eliminating the need for traditional non-renewable packaging.

Mark Ushpol, Executive Vice President for Ahlstrom’s food & consumer packaging division, explained, “Our BoundlessBarriers technologies empower our customers to adopt the next generation of truly sustainable packaging. Within this portfolio, our PFAS-free FluoroFree technology stands out for its exceptional grease-resistance, which currently surpasses all other options available in the market.”

Ushpol continued, “Collaborative partnerships, such as our frozen food development with the Paper People, are crucial in driving the boundaries of renewable and sustainable packaging and ensuring a better end-of-life for such materials.”
