Stora Enso is unveiling two notable updates to its Trayforma tray board line: an overall reduction in basis weight for the existing products and the introduction of Trayforma Brown, a completely new unbleached variant. These advancements enhance the material efficiency of the Trayforma series while offering brands a fresh option that embodies a natural aesthetic on store shelves.

The newly lighter version of Trayforma maintains the same strength, forming capabilities, and conversion reliability as the current base material, yet utilizes less raw material. This decrease in the amount of material used per tray translates to improved yields throughout the entire value chain, and a reduced board weight naturally lowers the carbon footprint during both production and transport.

Trayforma Brown caters to the growing preference for a premium, natural look in tray packaging. Its technical specifications are aligned with the standards of the entire Trayforma portfolio, and it is the first brown tray board engineered to support oven heating, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 220°C with a transparent PET coating. Additionally, it can be offered with a high-barrier BarrPeel solution ideal for vacuum-skin packaging.

“For our customers, the natural appearance of brown board is becoming increasingly important, but not at the expense of performance. With Trayforma Brown, they can achieve both. Moreover, our efforts in lightweighting Trayforma also ensure improved yields for everyone involved in the value chain,” notes Jaana Tani, technical account manager for Trayforma and Barriers at Stora Enso.

Both innovations are constructed from a three-ply design that incorporates CTMP in the middle layer, allowing for a reduction in basis weight without compromising board thickness. Trayforma Brown is particularly suitable for applications in ready meals, baked goods, and both chilled and frozen food products.

The lightweight Trayforma offerings, along with Trayforma Brown, will be showcased at Interpack 2026, taking place in Düsseldorf, Germany, from May 7 to 13.
