According to the latest report, convenience stores (c-stores) have once again emerged as one of the top three services with the most positive impact locally. Post offices and pharmacies are the only services that ranked higher in this regard. It’s noteworthy that post office counters are commonly found within local shops, and some of these stores even offer prescription collection services. This clearly demonstrates the vital role that c-stores play in promoting the health and well-being of their communities.
Surprisingly, the report also highlighted the significant regard that 18- to 24-year-olds have for local shops. Among this demographic, almost one-third expressed the belief that having more convenience stores in their local area would be beneficial. This percentage was higher compared to other age groups surveyed, challenging the notion that only older consumers appreciate the contribution of local shops to their communities.
Furthermore, the younger demographic ranked highest when it came to acknowledging the value of c-stores to their community. 46% of respondents in this group agreed that their local shop serves as a community hub, while 52% believed that it helps combat loneliness. These findings are encouraging for the industry and indicate a future market for independent c-stores. However, it is essential to ensure that the products offered align with their values, including sustainability, inclusivity, and ethical sourcing.
Despite these positive developments, there remains a persistent concern in the form of crime. The recent warning from the Co-op about gangs looting stores with impunity, due to the lack of police response, paints a bleak picture. This situation is even causing certain neighborhoods to be labeled as “no-go areas” for local shops. To ensure that stores can continue providing the benefits highlighted in the report from the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), urgent investment in local infrastructure and policing is necessary.
In conclusion, the ACS report emphasizes the significance of convenience stores and their positive impact on local communities. While the younger demographic proves to be a promising market for independent c-stores, addressing issues such as crime requires immediate attention. By focusing on customer preferences and values, and by engaging in sustainability practices, convenience store owners can strengthen their position in the market and contribute to the well-being of their communities.
