Fyffes has finalized an agreement to sell its Sol Group melon growing and distribution business to US-based Martori Farms.

While the financial terms of this transaction remain undisclosed, it marks a significant shift in the dynamics of melon production.

The Sol Group includes Fyffes’ melon production operations in Honduras and Guatemala, alongside a distribution hub in Miami, Florida.

According to a joint statement from both companies, this deal establishes “one of the world’s largest year-round melon producers.”

Describing itself as the “largest” supplier of winter melons to North American customers, Sol Group strengthens its market position.

Dublin-based Fyffes has indicated that this sale will enable the company to focus on its core categories: bananas and pineapples. By reallocating resources and expertise, Fyffes aims to enhance its market leadership in these areas.

Martori Farms, a family-owned grower with a legacy dating back to 1913 in Arizona and California, gains a new opportunity to leverage its well-known Kandy brand melons, including cantaloupe, watermelon, and lemon drop melon.

Fyffes noted that the combined farming and distribution footprint across the US, Central America, and South America will create the world’s “most reliable and diversified” melon supply chain.

Steve Martori III, CEO of Martori Farms, stated: “Our goal has always been to deliver melons that exceed consumer expectations—melons that delight with flavor, appearance, and quality.”

Furthermore, he emphasized, “The acquisition of Sol Group allows us to extend that promise across all 12 months of the year, while working with an extraordinary team of professionals who share our dedication to quality and sustainability.”

This acquisition follows Martori Farms’ March acquisition of VH Azhderian & Co., which strengthened its presence in California’s San Joaquin Valley.

Martori Farms plans to utilize the Los Banos facility to enhance nationwide production, cooling, storage, and distribution capabilities.
