NoPalm Ingredients Launches Industry-First Scaled Yeast Oil Food and Beverage Business

NoPalm Ingredients (NPI) has made a significant stride in the food and beverage industry trends, achieving a groundbreaking milestone with the successful scale of fermentation-derived oils and fats sourced from food industry side streams, generating an impressive 120,000 liters.

This development effectively validates the potential for upcycling food industry side streams into high-quality, food-grade oils, as stated by the company. Additionally, it demonstrates a viable solution for reducing reliance on palm and tropical oils within food manufacturing trends.

NPI successfully executed a trial at a contract manufacturing facility, where it transformed food industry side streams into sustainable oils through yeast-based fermentation, aligning with emerging food processing technology.

Palm Oil Alternatives

The company’s proprietary fermentation and downstream processing technology consistently “produced food-grade oils at industrial scale,” it is claimed. Consequently, the food and drink industry innovation may increasingly depend on circular alternatives to traditional palm and tropical oils to meet the growing demand, while simultaneously lowering emissions and land use.

“Three years ago, we were fermenting at benchtop scale,” said CEO and co-founder Lars Langhout. “This summer, we hit 5,000l and today we’ve successfully scaled to 120,000l. With palm oil demand forecasted to grow by 4% annually, the need for sustainable alternatives has never been greater.”

How to Replace Palm Oil

NPI’s alternative is positioned as a “drop-in” replacement for conventional natural oils, which Langhout believes could “reshape the industry.” At this stage, the ingredient is undergoing industrial-scale testing with NPI’s commercial partners to validate its performance and capabilities.

Furthermore, NPI is actively seeking collaboration with “forward-thinking” customers and investors to join what it refers to as the “next generation oil revolution.”

“This milestone is the result of relentless dedication and ingenuity from our team,” Langhout emphasized. “Now, it’s time to build on this momentum and scale toward full commercial deployment.”
