The Institution has recently announced a delay in the Scottish Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in order to achieve better consistency across the UK. This decision aligns with the Institution’s original consultation response regarding the matter.

Lee Marshall, the Policy & External Affairs Director at CIWM, expressed the organization’s appreciation for the benefits of having a more uniform DRS scheme across the country. Marshall also recognized the advanced planning and infrastructure investments that were made in Scotland, stating that it is not an ideal situation for the implementation of such a fundamental policy change within the sector.

It is important to acknowledge that waste policy is a devolved matter, allowing for variation between different nations. Nevertheless, the delay in the Scottish scheme to achieve greater alignment with the rest of the UK may ultimately bring benefits.

In summary, the delay of the Scottish DRS may be disruptive in the short term, but the long-term impact of a more consistent DRS scheme across the UK may be worth the wait. It is crucial to continue monitoring the situation and adapting to the changes in the sector.
