Germany’s REWE, one of the largest retail chains, is currently testing sustainable packaging solutions from Czech company Miwa in an effort to reduce packaging waste. Miwa’s modules enable customers to purchase items such as pasta, rice, and cereals in reusable and returnable containers, effectively minimizing packaging waste and food spoilage. The trial of this technology is taking place in eleven REWE stores across various German cities, including Cologne and Bonn. The modules were installed in mid-November, marking an important step for Miwa in the retail sector. Currently, Miwa also collaborates with other major European chains such as Albert Heijn in the Netherlands, Continente in Portugal, and Aldi in the UK.

“This is our largest pilot project in the retail segment so far. Unlike other chains, which typically test our technology in just a few stores, REWE is conducting trials in eleven stores. Germany is an attractive market for us, given its openness to ecological solutions. The public’s support for reusable packaging, along with new legislation, makes it an ideal environment for our technology,” says Mirek Lizec, Miwa’s executive director.

“The management of REWE was particularly interested in the hygienic and digital standards of our solution, as well as the safety and efficiency of sales. They were impressed by the user-friendliness and ease of understanding of our modules. Despite the European retail market facing challenges such as inflation, the war in Ukraine, and the repercussions of COVID-19, we are pleased to have established cooperation with such important players,” adds Mirek Lizec.

REWE’s waste-reducing modules primarily offer bio-quality products. Unlike traditional zero-waste solutions, no direct handling of open food occurs in these stores, as the products are delivered in closed capsules that are simply inserted into the module. This approach ensures optimal hygiene and maximum shelf-life of food.

The latest second-generation Miwa modules are being tested in REWE stores, featuring an integrated two-line display with scales and upgraded electronics and software. These improvements allow for greater product variety and prevent food items from getting stuck during the dispensing process, thanks to integrated vibrations.

Miwa’s solution relies on reusable capsules and the extensive utilization of smart data. One such capsule can eliminate nearly 2,000 pieces of disposable packaging throughout its lifecycle.

In terms of customer usage, individuals can either use a reusable returnable container provided by the store or bring their own container, which needs to be weighed on the module to calculate the product price based on weight. Customers then select the desired product on the display and fill their container by gently pushing it onto the feeder. Upon completion, the module prints a price tag for the customer to take to the checkout. After use, containers can be returned via machines in REWE shops and other partners.
