Roberts Bakery has announced a significant shift in its operations at the Derbyshire site, which specializes in the production of specialty breads and morning goods. This decision puts the jobs of 38 employees at risk.

The company described the move as a “difficult decision,” which stems from a “comprehensive review of the company’s product portfolio, overall footprint, and long-term business strategy.” While the Ilkeston site has historically contributed to the company’s success, the review led management to determine that it is “no longer aligned” with their future plans.

A formal consultation period will begin soon. Roberts Bakery aims to support the affected employees through individual meetings and practical assistance, helping them secure alternative employment opportunities within the local community.

In addition to the Ilkeston site, Roberts Bakery operates facilities in Winsford and Northwich. Earlier this year, the company revealed plans to cut up to 250 jobs at the Northwich site, following a devastating fire that occurred in June 2023.

In explaining this decision, Roberts Bakery noted that sales volumes have struggled to return to pre-fire levels, with many customers opting for alternative supply contracts during the recovery phase.

As of September 2024, Roberts Bakery employed approximately 700 individuals across its three sites. However, due to these recent developments, that number is expected to fall to around 400.
