Partnership between Avanti West Coast and DHL utilizes IoT technology to combat food waste

DHL Supply Chain UK has recently joined forces with train company Avanti West Coast to implement innovative IoT temperature monitoring devices aimed at reducing food wastage on the train’s onboard food service. This partnership marks a significant step forward in the UK rail industry’s approach to food safety and waste reduction.

The deployment of these cutting-edge devices represents a groundbreaking initiative within the rail sector. By harnessing IoT technology, DHL and Avanti West Coast seek to enhance temperature monitoring accuracy and efficiency to prevent unnecessary food spoilage. Real-time temperature data from the devices, mounted on individual trolleys, can be easily accessed by staff through a simple QR code scan. This enables operators to make informed decisions on food preservation, ultimately helping to minimize waste.

Following a successful trial period, the smart monitors are now being systematically integrated across DHL’s entire Avanti West Coast network. The data captured by these IoT devices is systematically stored and readily accessible for analysis, enabling continuous enhancement of service performance and efficiency.

Philippa Creswell, executive director of onboard services at Avanti West Coast, emphasized the partnership’s role in advancing sustainability goals. By leveraging this innovative temperature monitoring technology, the catering operations can make more informed choices regarding food waste management, contributing to a more eco-conscious approach.

Dan Peacock, managing director at DHL Supply Chain, highlighted the significant impact of the IoT devices on food waste reduction, underscoring the company’s commitment to digital innovation and sustainable practices. By embracing new technologies, DHL aims to deliver value to customers while prioritizing environmental responsibility.

The integration of smart IoT devices in the Avanti West Coast operation exemplifies DHL and Avanti West Coast’s dedication to driving positive change and fostering sustainability.
