Driving Sustainability and Innovation in Food and Drink Packaging

Wipak Group has announced a series of significant multi-million-euro investments aimed at enhancing operations and reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability. These strategic investments, set to be implemented across various Wipak locations in the upcoming years, represent a major milestone in the firm’s ongoing drive towards a more sustainable future. In alignment with Wipak’s decarbonization strategy, the organization has taken decisive steps to manage and control scope 1 and 2 emissions. Since beginning its carbon zero journey in 2019, Wipak has achieved an impressive 70% reduction in its operational carbon footprint (scope 1 and 2 emissions) compared to the original baseline.

Strategic Investments in Finland to Enhance Health and Food Segments

Wipak Oy, located in Finland, is making significant investments to bolster its operations within the Wipak Group. Recently, a state-of-the-art extrusion production line has been completed at Wipak Nastola, which enhances the company’s annual capacity and expands its offerings in recycle-ready and healthcare packaging. This investment in cutting-edge technology enables Wipak to introduce a new range of PE-based films for Flowpack applications, as well as innovative PE-based lidding films designed specifically for recycling and suitable for food and drink packaging applications. Furthermore, the cleanroom facilities for Wipak Steriking® products at this site will undergo updates and expansions over the next three years, focusing on modern machinery and increased production capacity to maintain the high standards of quality and safety for Steriking® hospital sterilization packaging solutions, ultimately improving patient safety.

Tuija Suur-Hamari, Managing Director at Wipak Oy and Wipak Health Business, emphasizes that responsibility and sustainability are not only reflected in Wipak’s products but also in its factory operations. Through a holistic approach, the company’s vision extends beyond individual investments. Wipak aims to become the world’s most responsible plastic packaging manufacturer, targeting a zero-carbon footprint by 2025. This goal involves tightly controlling and minimizing emissions across all scope 1, 2, and 3 sources under the company’s direct oversight while offsetting only minimally unavoidable emissions.

Continuing the Transition to Sustainable Solutions Across Europe

To further boost the production of recycling-ready products, significant growth investments are set to commence at Wipak Walsrode and Iberica sites. Wipak Walsrode in Germany will undergo a substantial multi-million-euro investment over the next three years, incorporating state-of-the-art converting machinery and optimized material flows to enhance manufacturing processes and improve logistics efficiency. Simultaneously, Wipak Iberica in Spain will benefit from several million euros allocated for investments.

Moreover, Wipak Gryspeert in France is making notable advancements with the implementation of a new advanced cast line known as “Greencast.” This line enhances the group’s abilities to provide co-extruded mono-material solutions for thermoforming applications, further supporting the commercialization of recyclable packaging solutions across Europe.

These investments not only foster the growth of sustainable packaging at Wipak but also ensure compliance with the latest European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). As a result, Wipak can continue to deliver high-quality and innovative solutions while meeting the company’s sustainability targets. Success stories emerging from the food and drink packaging divisions indicate the market’s readiness for sustainable alternatives. By upgrading facilities and enhancing capabilities, Wipak is prepared to tackle customer and market challenges, creating new opportunities for sustainable flexible packaging solutions and expanding its market presence.

Karri Koskela, CEO of Wipak Group, highlighted the importance of these strategic investments: “These investments show that Wipak is all in on growth, innovation, and sustainability. We are proud that these steps not only align with our values and are the right thing to do, but they also reflect the right course of action – a path that ensures growth, secures future success, and strengthens our partnerships with customers who share our vision for a sustainable future.”
