The World Packaging Organization (WPO) has announced the winners of the WorldStar 2023 and WorldStar Student awards at a prestigious gala ceremony held on May 06 at Messe Düsseldorf. Out of the total 228 winners, 140 companies were present at the event to receive their trophies. This year’s WorldStar edition was a record-breaking one, with 488 entries submitted from 41 countries, compared to the previous year’s 440 competitors from 37 countries.
WPO Vice President of Events and WorldStar Coordinator, Soha Atallah, expressed her delight, stating that “these numbers confirm that WorldStar is the most prestigious and important packaging award globally, and interpack was the perfect place to award these incredible packages.”
In addition to the main awards, the WPO also presented winners with Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards for Special Categories, including Marketing, Sustainability, Accessible Packaging, and Packaging that Saves Food. Pierre Pienaar, the WPO President, highlighted the significance of these special categories, stating that “they reinforce the importance and power of the main trends in packaging. We highly recommend that companies apply for WorldStar. Participating and winning WorldStar is a global recognition and puts your packaging in a different and prestigious level.”
The Gala Dinner ceremony also included the presentation of the President’s Award. From the submitted entries, Pierre Pienaar chose the one that represented the main innovation and differentiation in the packaging industry.
The WorldStar Awards are open to packages that have received a national or regional packaging award from a packaging competition that is recognized by WPO during the past two years. This event aims to promote packaging innovation in various sectors, proving that good packaging can solve modern problems like sustainable consumption chains, prevention of food waste, extension of shelf life, safety, and consumer convenience.

– Bronze – Raja (Norway) – SeaStretch, the first manual stretch wrap made of paper.

– Gold – Toyo Seikan (Japan) – Finger-fitting tab for food can lid.
– Silver – Caps & Closures (Australia & New Zealand) – EzyGrip.
– Bronze – The Salt Industry Center (Japan) – Shio Hitofuri one-shake (“hitofuri”) salt.

– Gold – Amcor Copperprotek (Chile) – LifeSpan copper-based film.
– Silver – Caps & Closures (Australia & New Zealand) – ThermoShield temperature monitoring system.
– Bronze – Masterpack Group (Netherlands) – Modified atmosphere technology.
Luciana Pellegrino, the Senior Vice President of Marketing and the President-elect of WPO to assume on November 25, added that packages eligible for WorldStar Awards should present a solution to various modern problems in the packaging industry, including sustainability and food waste reduction. She further stated that WorldStar offers global recognition to packaging solutions that are both innovative and sustainable.
