Mondi, a global leader in paper and packaging, is investing in innovative technologies to meet the growing demand for sustainable paper-based food packaging solutions. The company is expanding its range of FunctionalBarrier Paper to offer tailored barrier properties that reduce plastic usage in packaging, supporting the development of a circular economy.

To achieve this goal, Mondi is investing in a new extruder at its Coating Štĕtí plant in the Czech Republic. This will involve the construction of a state-of-the-art production building, which will house essential machinery such as an extrusion coater and a slitting machine. The project is expected to be completed by 2024.

Furthermore, Mondi is also rebuilding its existing coater at the Jülich plant in Germany, with the addition of two new dispersion coating stations. The upgrade will improve barrier properties by ensuring good coverage on the base paper. The new coating kitchen will enable the pre-coating of base paper and expand the offering to include more paper grades, especially containing recycled content.

The company’s investments underline the strength of its integrated value chain, from responsible sourcing to production, coating, and packaging conversion into the final product. Mondi is also optimizing its Örebro plant in Sweden, where additional employment opportunities will be created, and the production of its FunctionalBarrier Paper range will be further improved.

Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper range offers a sustainable fiber-based packaging alternative. It is particularly suitable for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and can be recycled in existing paper waste streams across Europe. The range comprises varying barrier levels and is tailor-made for industrial and e-commerce applications, personal care, frozen food, and chocolate packaging.

According to Marko Schuster, COO of Functional Paper & Films at Mondi, “We are seeing a strong drive in the end markets to reduce the use of plastic and move towards more sustainable paper-based packaging solutions. Our FunctionalBarrier Paper range reflects Mondi’s commitment to this and promotes a circular economy, in line with our MAP2030 goals. We are excited to expand our portfolio and enable our customers to make a smooth transition to more sustainable packaging solutions to meet the growing needs of their consumers.”

In conclusion, Mondi’s investment in innovative technologies highlights its commitment to providing sustainable food packaging solutions. By expanding its range of FunctionalBarrier Papers and optimizing its production capacities, Mondi is proving to be a forward-thinking company that prioritizes sustainability and customer satisfaction.
