Tri-Star Packaging has launched a new range of sustainable packaging products to help takeaway and food delivery businesses prepare for the upcoming single-use plastic ban in October 2023. The food-to-go packaging supplier has already been distributing sustainable alternatives to businesses in Scotland, Wales and Europe before the ban was announced.

Lee Richards, the Sales Director at Tri-Star Packaging, stated that the company has all the experience, expertise and products in place to help hospitality businesses navigate the changes they need to make, easily and efficiently. With the impending ban, the packaging offer is made from a selection of compostable, renewable and recyclable materials designed to help caterers replace affected product ranges.

The government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) revealed that England uses 2.7 billion items of single-use cutlery, with only 10% being recycled. This has resulted in the ban covering single-use plastic plates, trays, bowls, cutlery and certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers. This ban will affect all businesses, including retailers, takeaways, food vendors and the hospitality industry.

Tri-Star Packaging has a range of sustainable packaging solutions to replace affected product ranges, including the innovative 100% compostable BePulp range made from natural fibres. The range includes bowls, containers and trays with optional clear and bagasse lids. The new microwavable Infinity range is fully recyclable and offers thermal properties to keep food hotter for longer.

Additionally, the company’s reCUP paper cups and Bioware single wall hot cups are recyclable or compostable, respectively. The Enjoy range can be recycled through cup recovery schemes. Tri-Star Packaging challenges manufacturers to push boundaries and develop new products in the food-to-go industry.

Tri-Star Packaging has also launched a range of kraft food boxes lined with Notpla Coating, an innovative special lining made from seaweed that replaces the plastic coating usually used on foodservice products. Notpla won an Earthshot Prize from Prince William in December. Notpla Coating takes less than six weeks to completely decompose in a home composting environment and the fully recyclable, Notpla coated kraft food boxes are grease and heat-resistant, stackable and easy to use.

With Tri-Star Packaging’s sustainable food packaging solutions, hospitality businesses can easily navigate the upcoming single-use plastic ban and ensure the most suitable, sustainable, long-term solutions are identified.
