The Baker’s Dozen, India’s largest artisan bakery brand, is taking significant steps towards sustainability this financial year. With a firm commitment to reducing its carbon footprint by 10-15% and minimizing plastic usage, the brand has implemented an impactful initiative. Utilizing Recykal’s Plastic Neutrality solution, The Baker’s Dozen has successfully neutralized its plastic footprint for the period from April to July 2023.

During this time, The Baker’s Dozen managed to recover an impressive 35.29 MT of MLP (Multi Layered Plastic) and 0.4 MT of LDPE (Low Density Poly Ethylene) plastic waste, showcasing its dedication to plastic waste management.

This achievement has resulted in several positive impacts:

  1. A remarkable reduction of 48.5 MT of CO2 emissions
  2. An impressive generation of 19409.5 KWh energy from waste

For a brand to be certified as plastic-neutral, Recykal follows a meticulous three-step process. Firstly, the brand’s plastic footprint is meticulously calculated, considering both mandatory and voluntary compliance. Secondly, Recykal’s digital platform verifies the accuracy of the calculated footprint. Finally, Recykal offers solutions to offset the impact and ensures that the calculated footprint is recovered. Upon receiving Impact Recovery Tokens, the brand is recognized as plastic-neutral.

Ekta Narain, Co-Founder and Chief Business Officer at Recykal, commended The Baker’s Dozen on their incredible achievement. Narain stated, “Congratulations to The Baker’s Dozen on their remarkable achievement of plastic neutrality! We applaud their dedication and commitment to sustainable practices. By effectively offsetting their plastic footprint, they have contributed to a greener and cleaner environment, setting a compelling example for other businesses to follow. As more forward-thinking brands step up to offset their plastic usage, our mission at Recykal is to bring 10 percent of India’s waste into a circular Economy by 2027. Together, we can contribute to a more sustainable future for future generations.”

Commenting on this initiative, Aditi Handa, Co-founder & Head Chef of The Baker’s Dozen, expressed their motivation behind this sustainable journey. Handa said, “All the positive changes we have made are a direct result of customer feedback. In 2019, when we shifted to plastic packaging, it upset some of our customers, and they were kind enough to express their disappointment. Since then, we have been determined to take action and offset the impact. Although we may be a little late, we are finally embarking on a journey to give back to Mother Earth for everything it has provided us. This is just the beginning, and our efforts will only continue to grow.”
