Tenzing, chief executive of a beverage company, is spearheading an initiative to introduce carbon labelling at major sports events in the UK. The Six Nations rugby, the FA Cup Final, and British Grand Prix are among the events that will soon offer carbon-labelled food and drink to an estimated 15 million fans annually.

During a recent campaign called Knowvember, Tenzing championed the need for brands to disclose their carbon emissions through carbon counts. These efforts were underscored by research conducted in 2022, which revealed the growing concern among British consumers about the environmental impact of the food and drink industry.

Huib van Bockel, the CEO, emphasized the importance of carbon labelling in the food and drink industry, stating that “If food labelling can lead to a healthier diet, then carbon labelling can lead to a healthier planet.” He highlighted the industry’s significant contribution to global emissions and called for greater transparency, making a case for mandatory carbon labelling across the industry.

This move towards carbon labelling aligns with a growing demand for sustainability and transparency in the food and drink industry. Businesses are increasingly focused on food and drink sustainability, sustainable packaging, and addressing consumer trends. As Tenzing sets the stage for this transformative change, the industry is urged to reevaluate its approach to marketing and production practices. The initiative’s commitment to carbon labelling reflects an active response to consumer concerns and an evolving business landscape.
