Tata Steel will be showcasing the steel can and its sustainable nature as part of the Resource Waste Management (RWM) Expo at NEC Birmingham on 13 – 14 September. Their presentation at 3.15pm on 13 September will feature TV chef Theo Michaels, who will demonstrate the convenience of cooking with canned food while highlighting its infinite recyclability.
In collaboration with Nicola Jones and Eleanor Shorland from the Steel Packaging Recycling team, Theo Michaels will prepare two showstopping dishes using canned ingredients. As both the resident chef for Channel 4’s “Steph’s Packed Lunch” and the longstanding ambassador for Canned Food UK, Theo has extensive experience and knowledge in advocating for the benefits of tinned food.
During the live demonstration, Theo will cook a Goan banana blossom curry and a grilled apricot and Puy lentil salad from his recent book, “Canned.” These recipes highlight the versatility of canned ingredients, encompassing seven different types within just two dishes.
Theo comments, “Banana blossom, commonly found in canned form in the UK, serves as an excellent vegan substitute in fish dishes. Additionally, canned foods greatly simplify meal preparation, making them the original ready-made meals.”
Nicola Jones, Tata Steel’s Steel Packaging Recycling Manager, further emphasizes the advantages of canned foods. She explains, “With a shelf life of up to three to five years, steel cans significantly reduce food wastage in both households and manufacturing processes. Furthermore, cans do not require preservatives as the produce is cooked within the can, thereby preserving its nutrients.”
Attendees can sample the dishes prepared in the demonstration at the Tata Steel stand R-M220, where recipe cards will be available. Theo will also be present to answer any additional questions, while the wider Tata Steel team will be present throughout the show.
