Sykell, a pioneering circular economy firm based in Berlin, is excited to unveil the expansion of its innovative reusable packaging system, EINFACH MEHRWEG PREFILL. This new initiative enhances its existing EINFACH MEHRWEG system, bringing Sykell closer to creating a comprehensive reusable ecosystem. Alongside the launch in Germany, the company is also broadening its range of packaging solutions, making them available as a complete package for operators in the reusable packaging sector throughout Europe.

Davide Mazzanti, CEO and Co-Founder of Sykell, emphasizes the importance of reusable systems in addressing the significant resource waste linked to single-use plastics in the food sector. The European Packaging Regulation (PPWR) mandates that from 2030, brands must incorporate at least 10% recycled content in their packaging. This presents a substantial challenge because, with few exceptions like the deposit return system for PET bottles, utilizing recycled materials has proven difficult and not scalable while maintaining food safety. Sykell PREFILL aims to set a new benchmark for food packaging reuse, including facilitating monomaterial recycling at the end of product life. This development enables participants in a reusable packaging system, such as EINFACH MEHRWEG in Germany, to effectively convert packaging waste from downcycling into a true closed-loop cycle, as Mazzanti states.

The PREFILL design, available in 500 ml and 1500 ml options, empowers food manufacturers to manage their brands more effectively. Its versatile packaging is suitable for a variety of products, from pre-packaged salads and ready-to-eat meals to snacks and dairy alternatives. Thanks to advanced Ultrahigh Barrier and Re-Sealable technologies, the products will not compromise on taste, aroma, or appearance, offering an experience comparable to traditional single-use packaging. By integrating into the scalable EINFACH MEHRWEG ecosystem, food manufacturers can also exceed the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive requirements. As part of the EINFACH MEHRWEG system, PREFILL packaging can be returned by consumers at more than 6,000 return points in Germany, conveniently accessed through established reverse vending machines, and is designed for practical everyday use. Furthermore, the solution is optimized to minimize space constraints at food retail return locations.

Sykell PREFILL represents the first-ever reusable primary plastic packaging option for pre-packaged foods across diverse categories. The containers are engineered to be fully compatible with reverse vending systems and other plastic container return methods in Germany, managed through Sykell’s CIRCULAR ERP platform. For regions lacking a deposit return system, Sykell is committed to collaborating with stakeholders to devise effective return solutions. The software enables the scaling of reuse by tracking assets across system partners, facilitating the automation of circular processes—from inventory management to financial operations, including deposit tracking. Essentially, through Sykell’s integrated approach with the EINFACH MEHRWEG ecosystem and CIRCULAR ERP software, the company is dedicated to promoting large-scale reuse.

Sykell PREFILL will be showcased to trade visitors at the BIOFACH trade fair in Nuremberg, beginning February 10.

EINFACH MEHRWEG’s return initiatives for takeaway food have already gained traction with retail partners like REWE, Nahkauf, and HIT across Germany. The existing cleaning infrastructure for takeaway packaging and PREFILL is the same, simplifying the system’s expansion within Germany. With these advantages in mind, Sykell aims to position EINFACH MEHRWEG as the premier intelligent reusable ecosystem for plastic takeaway and food packaging in the country. Internationally, Sykell acts as a partner for existing reusable systems by enhancing their offerings with innovative software and packaging solutions.
