South African PET manufacturer Q Pet is enhancing its production capabilities by localizing the manufacture of tethered closures at its Pietermaritzburg facility. Founded in 1988, this family-owned business consistently showcases its dedication to innovation, sustainability, and responsive local manufacturing.
This strategic investment is timely, as regional retail groups increasingly demand locally produced tethered closures to meet sustainability goals and regulatory requirements. Leveraging its established manufacturing expertise, Q Pet is poised to address this mounting demand effectively.
“The demand for locally produced tethered closures represents a significant opportunity for South African manufacturing,” states Ziyaad Moosa, CEO of Q Pet. “By investing in this technology now, we’re not only responding to current market needs but also preparing for the future of sustainable packaging.”
Meeting Market and Sustainability Objectives
To execute this expansion effectively, Q Pet identified a comprehensive solution with the capability of:
- Meeting the increasing local demand for tethered closures
- Delivering high-quality closures suitable for high-speed filling operations
- Supporting sustainability goals through lightweight, precision-engineered designs
- Reducing the carbon footprint associated with imported closures
The Husky Solution
Q Pet’s collaboration with Husky Technologies has evolved over several years of strategic planning and market appraisal. While the vision for local tethered closure production was clear, both companies focused on aligning the timing and technology with South Africa’s market needs.
In 2024, this alignment materialized through the implementation of Husky’s HyCAP mold technology, which provides:
- Superior closure quality optimized for high-speed filling lines
- Advanced tethered designs featuring a 180-degree opening angle and secure locking mechanism
- Precision-engineered lightweight construction that supports sustainability objectives while ensuring structural integrity
The new production line has already been installed, and commissioning is currently underway. Initial production of 38mm tethered closures is projected to exceed 200 million units annually. Additionally, Q Pet plans to launch 28mm tethered PCO 1881 closures later this year, targeting an initial annual output of 200 million units.
“As we expand our capabilities with this new tethered closure line, we remain focused on sustainable growth and local market development,” Moosa adds. “This investment reflects our commitment to environmental responsibility and South African manufacturing excellence.”
Strengthening Local Manufacturing and Reducing Carbon Impact
By localizing tethered closure production, Q Pet significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with imports while reinforcing its status as a Level 2 BBBEE supplier registered with South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE).
Beyond tethered closures, Q Pet is also ramping up its preform, blowing, and closure production capacities by integrating the latest technologies. The company remains committed to investing in new opportunities within food and beverage packaging, dairy, and more.
