Tetra Pak has made significant strides towards sustainability in the year 2022, according to its latest report. The company reduced operational greenhouse gas emissions by 39%, with renewable sources accounting for 84% of its energy. This puts Tetra Pak firmly on track to achieve net zero within its operations by 2030.

The company’s efforts extend beyond reducing emissions, with Tetra Pak also investing nearly €30m to accelerate collection and recycling of beverage cartons. Furthermore, working with food technology incubators and start-ups has allowed Tetra Pak to explore the future of sustainable food.

Other highlights from the report include Tetra Pak’s testing of an industry-first fibre-based barrier to replace the thin aluminium foil layer in aseptic carton packages, recognition for leadership in corporate transparency and performance on climate change and forests by global environmental non-profit CDP, designing a new processing method for soya drinks, as well as a new technology to transform Brewer’s Spent Grain into a plant-based beverage.

Restoration of 87 hectares of land through the Araucaria Conservation Programme in Brazil and implementing the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights are also significant achievements. Furthermore, the company has made progress on diversity, equity and inclusion.

According to Adolfo Orive, president and chief executive at Tetra Pak, the company has taken a holistic approach across five interconnected and interdependent areas where it can contribute the most: food systems, circularity, climate, nature, and social sustainability. “This is the only way we can meet the scale and speed of change required to strengthen food access while reducing the environmental impact, in a way that leaves no one behind,” he added.

Undoubtedly, Tetra Pak has set an impressive example of how businesses can adopt sustainable practices across their operations while maintaining profitability. It is noteworthy that these efforts are not only making a positive impact on the planet, but they are also attracting consumers who demand environment-friendly products. Tetra Pak is well on its way to achieving its sustainable goals, and its commitment to prioritizing people and planet is a refreshing reminder of what can be achieved with sustained effort and dedication.
