Mondi, a global leader in sustainable food and drink packaging, is solidifying its role as a reliable partner for the food industry by launching an expanded food packaging portfolio. This new portfolio includes innovative solid board solutions and enhanced digital printing capabilities, following the acquisition of Schumacher Packaging. This strategic move bolsters Mondi’s capacity to serve customers throughout Europe more effectively.

With this expansion, Mondi now offers one of the most extensive ranges of food and drink sustainable packaging solutions available. From corrugated and solid board options to a full array of flexible packaging, this enhancement allows Mondi to assist customers in adapting to evolving consumer expectations, EU regulations, and the increasing demand for sustainable, convenient, and eye-catching packaging.

Addressing Key Industry Trends

Mondi’s broadened offerings are specifically designed to meet the critical trends influencing the food and drink packaging sector today:

  • Lightweighting and Smaller Portions – Optimizing material use with smaller packs and lighter, high-performance fiber-based materials enhances consumer convenience.
  • Retail Ready Packaging (RRP) and Point-of-Sale Displays – Solutions that boost brand recognition, enhance shelf visibility, and streamline packing and replenishment processes.
  • Sustainability – Packaging designed to be 100% renewable or recyclable, in alignment with EU directives such as the PPWR, promoting circularity and complying with eco-design requirements for both retailers’ private-label brands and manufacturers’ brands.

“The food sector is undergoing rapid change, with sustainability targets, EU legislation, and shifting consumer behaviours all driving new requirements for packaging. By expanding our portfolio, we can help customers respond to these trends with solutions that are lighter, more sustainable, and optimized for shelf appeal,” says Paulus Goëss, Chief Operating Officer of Corrugated Solutions at Mondi.

A Comprehensive Corrugated and Solid Board Portfolio

Mondi’s expanded food packaging portfolio now includes:

  • Fresh Produce – Ventilated trays, boxes, and stackable trays as part of Mondi’s Grow&Go portfolio, plus octabins for efficient transport.
  • Meat, Poultry, and Seafood – High-strength trays, leakproof boxes, sleeves, and wraps ensuring product safety and extended shelf life.
  • Dairy – Ventilated trays, multipacks, and sleeves for safe refrigerated transport and visibility.
  • Frozen Food – Solid board boxes with premium printing for high visibility on shelves, designed for sustainable deep-freeze applications.
  • Snacks and Confectionery – Shelf-ready packaging, customized point-of-sale displays, trays and hoods, multipacks, wraps, along with innovations like TwinBox.
  • Beverages – Multipacks, wraparounds, trays, and clips for PET bottles, including Mondi’s Hug&Hold innovation and TankerBox for bulk transportation.

In addition to these sectors, Mondi provides eCommerce packaging solutions tailored for online grocery shopping, which combine smart designs with various bottom and closure options, practical inserts, and features that make packages easy to open and carry.

Expanded Regional Supply and Capabilities

By integrating Schumacher Packaging’s facilities, Mondi has enhanced its footprint in Europe, resulting in improved production flexibility and reliability in regional supply. Backed by accredited Food Safety and Performance Labs, Mondi delivers tested and custom solutions that enhance product safety, performance, and shelf appeal. The company also operates ThinkBox innovation hubs, allowing technical experts and customers to collaborate on packaging design and process optimization.

Employing a diverse range of digital, flexo, and offset printing technologies, Mondi can meet a wide array of customer needs. Notably, Mondi has been a pioneer in the industry by extending six-color digital printing for corrugated packaging to include white ink, addressing the increasing demand for white digital printing on brown substrates.
