Macpac, situated in Stockport, is recognized as one of the UK’s top independently owned manufacturers of thermoformed packaging. They have recently unveiled a novel dome-shaped pack specifically designed for Martin’s Chocolatier’s premium Snow Globe chocolate Santa and snowball truffles.

Martin’s Chocolatier specializes in luxury specialty chocolates sourced from renowned Artisan chocolatiers worldwide. Their selection focuses on unparalleled taste and texture, crafted with genuine passion, flair, skill, and the finest ingredients.

To meet their needs, the online retailer sought a distinctive snow globe-style pack that would securely hold a hollow chocolate Santa alongside snowball truffles, allowing consumers to easily invert it for sprinkling icing onto the chocolates.

Philip Ahn from Martin’s Chocolatier elaborated: “Our vision for this product was an eye-catching pack design that not only made the perfect festive centrepiece but that could actually be used like a traditional glass snow globe, while still maintaining the integrity of the chocolate contents.”

He continued, “It was a big ask and we approached Macpac after several failed prototypes from another company who was unable to create a dome pack that met the necessary strength requirements or could function as a snow globe.”

In response, Macpac’s in-house design team created a clear two-piece pack featuring a robust domed lid that securely clips onto a separate base. This 100% recyclable snow globe is constructed from lightweight rPET (recycled PET) and includes a friction clip mechanism along with transparent self-adhesive security tabs.

Neil Greenhalgh, Sales Engineer at Macpac, commented on the project: “There were a number of design issues to overcome with this project. Part of the brief was for the forming to grip and hold the hollow chocolate mould tightly enough for it to be turned upside down. Holding such a delicate item securely without damaging or crushing it was a challenge!”

He added, “This meant that the holding of the Santa in position by his feet was literally touch and go but the team pulled out all the stops to get a design that matched the brief, and we are delighted with the end result.”

Philip also praised the team, stating, “The team at Macpac are true geniuses; this type of pack and product has never been done before, and they managed to pull it off. It helped the process significantly to have design, tooling, and manufacturing all under one roof.”

The chocolate snow globe is elegantly presented in a custom cardboard box, showcasing a stunning winter wonderland scene.

Macpac specializes in designing and manufacturing a diverse range of high-performance thermoformed packaging for the food and drink industry, including bespoke trays, box inserts, clam packs, and flow wrap trays. Their functional, durable, and 100% recyclable packs are produced from rPET with a minimum of 80% recycled content, reinforcing their commitment to food and drink sustainable packaging.

By adhering to the highest quality standards, Macpac possesses full British Retail Consortium Consumer Goods certification for Packaging Materials.
