Lieferando, the renowned Austrian ordering platform, is set to debut delivery boxes featuring Xampla’s groundbreaking Morro™ coating in Austria. This innovative packaging is suitable for a diverse array of foods and dishes, showcasing the world’s first plastic-free coating for takeaway containers derived from plant protein. This award-winning solution is now available to all Lieferando restaurant partners, following a significant collaboration with the packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki.
Constructed from sustainably sourced corrugated cardboard and finished with a plastic-free Morro coating, these fully biodegradable boxes provide Lieferando Austria’s 4,800 restaurant partners with an environmentally responsible alternative to traditional food and drink packaging. Beyond sustainability, these durable packages offer excellent thermal insulation, making them ideal for transporting a wide variety of meals, including greasy foods that typically present challenges during delivery. As Lieferando Managing Director Natascha Mauthner states, “Thanks to their durability and thermal insulation, these packages are suitable for a wide range of foods and dishes—including greasy meals that are traditionally difficult to transport.”
This innovative packaging has already demonstrated success in the UK and Germany, with positive feedback highlighting strong demand for eco-friendly alternatives. “We’re all the more pleased that this unique solution can now be ordered via our partner webshop in Austria and used by our local restaurant partners,” explains Natascha Mauthner.
A world-first, award-winning coating
Central to this packaging innovation is the Morro coating, developed by Xampla, a leading expert in material innovation based in the UK. This plant-derived coating is produced without chemical modification, making it recyclable and biodegradable in any environment, thus establishing it as a versatile option for food and drink sustainable packaging.
“We are excited to work with Lieferando and Huhtamaki—two forward-thinking partners who share our commitment to reducing plastic pollution,” states Xampla CEO Alexandra French. “Our Morro coating is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing packaging processes and offers a high-performance alternative to plastic. Together, we are setting a new standard for environmentally conscious food packaging.”
This innovation has garnered several accolades this year, including “Packaging of the Year” at the Responsible Packaging Expo Awards 2025, “Innovation of the Year” at the UK Packaging Awards 2025, Gold in the “Food-on-the-go: Takeaway” category at the Environmental Packaging Live Awards 2025, Silver in the “Eco-pack of the Year Award” category at the Grocer New Product and Packaging Awards 2025, and the “E-Commerce” category at this year’s Sustainability Awards at the Sustainable Packaging Summit.
Plastic reduction as a strategic priority
The introduction of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics aligns with the global ambition of Lieferando’s parent company, Just Eat Takeaway.com, to reduce plastic consumption in its operational sphere. Through its partnership with Huhtamaki, Lieferando is expanding the range of eco-friendly packaging options in Austria, supporting its global strategy. This empowers partners to utilize plastic-free alternatives that comply with the EU’s single-use plastics directive for delivery and takeaway.
