Mondi and Veetee have partnered to introduce the UK’s first paper-based packaging for dry rice, marking a pivotal step in sustainable food packaging. Leveraging Mondi’s recyclable FunctionalBarrier Paper, the innovative packaging solution was meticulously designed for Veetee’s rice range, which hit store shelves in April.
This groundbreaking packaging offers a direct alternative to plastic, while providing the necessary barrier properties to safeguard the products and align with Veetee’s commitment to plastic reduction. Mondi executed a comprehensive in-house solution for Veetee, encompassing the sourcing of certified renewable materials, production of certified kraft paper, incorporation of barrier functionality, and printing, culminating in the delivery of the final paper-based reels for Veetee’s conversion and filling processes.
Throughout the entire creation journey, these two companies closely collaborated to ensure that the packaging met Veetee’s specific needs. In the context of food products, it was imperative to have packaging with barrier properties that effectively shielded the contents from moisture and ensured an extended shelf life. Several trials were conducted to develop a fully customized and optimal solution, striking the perfect balance between functionality and Veetee’s objective of reducing plastic waste while embracing recyclability.
The newly developed packs have earned certification from OPRL, affirming their wide acceptance for kerbside recycling in the UK. By facilitating effortless disposal for end-users and supporting a circular economy, these packaging solutions further enhance their sustainability credentials.
Leveraging Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper, Veetee can fully utilize its high printability to communicate important disposal messages on the pack. Additionally, retailers have the opportunity to prominently promote the Veetee brand and its diverse range of products on-store shelves.
James Brett, Veetee’s group marketing director, expressed his pride in achieving their goal of eradicating unsustainable packaging, underscoring their pioneering position as the first to introduce paper packaging in the UK, complemented by their distinctive Rice Box.
