DS Smith, a leading global manufacturer of fibre-based sustainable packaging solutions, has collaborated with global snacking company pladis to reduce plastic in its iconic orange Jacob’s Cream Crackers box by 78%. This transformation maintains a tamperproof pack with impactful branding, meeting the increasing demand for plastic reduction in food and drink packaging.
pladis approached DS Smith to create new packaging for the Jacob’s Crackers Selection pack, aiming to minimize plastic waste while retaining the tamper-proof seal. After thorough testing by DS Smith designers, the final product features 78% less plastic per pack, resulting in a reduction of over 373,248kg of CO2. The new packaging maintains high-quality print standards while significantly reducing plastic usage.
As over a third of Brits consider Father’s Day a significant event that warrants celebration, finding the perfect gift for Dad can be challenging. With food and drink being the most popular gift category for Father’s Day, Jacob’s crackers serve as an ideal addition to any cheese-related gift. Moreover, the new sustainable packaging makes them an excellent choice for environmentally-conscious Dads.
The new packaging, already available on shelves, combines sustainability with the iconic design associated with Jacob’s. Not only is it a thoughtful gift for Father’s Day, but families can also enjoy their Jacob’s crackers knowing that they can recycle the packaging.
Paul Bridge at DS Smith stated: “Consumers are increasingly concerned about the amount of plastic in their packaging. Our collaboration with pladis on the Jacob’s Cream Crackers packaging showcases our commitment to reducing plastic waste without compromising design aesthetics.”
David Guy, Packaging Director at pladis UK&I added: “Redesigning our packaging was a significant step for us, especially given the iconic status of the Jacob’s brand. Working with DS Smith, we achieved a solution that aligned with our current manufacturing setup while maintaining our branding integrity.”
Aligned with its Now and Next strategy and mission to Redefine Packaging for a Changing World, DS Smith utilizes its Circular Design Metrics to evaluate the circularity of packaging designs. This framework has supported thousands of design projects and led to the presentation of around 3,000 circular-ready projects monthly to customers.
Besides the collaboration on Jacob’s packaging, DS Smith has assisted other pladis brands in enhancing their sustainability efforts. This includes designing display packaging to promote McVitie’s ‘Golden Buzzer’ competition in stores.
